Dell launches ZubaBox in Nigeria

Dell has launched its first solar powered lab – the ZubaBox mobile classroom – in Nigeria, Africa to increase educational opportunities for students with minimal access to technology or the internet.

The solar powered lab has been installed at a high school in Lagos, allowing the institution to connect to any electrical infrastructure, providing an affordable education solution for the local community.

Pioneered by UK-based charity Computer Aid International, the ZubaBox solution is powered by solar panels mounted on the school’s roof, which charge a battery bank during the day, allowing the classroom to be used after dark if required.

By sponsoring one ZubaBox, companies can benefit an entire community by providing the ICT to support education, healthcare and business

Equipped with Dell Wyse, a shared computing system, the ZubaBox enables teachers to maintain centralised control of the class from one PC, which is linked to ten workstations and needs only three watts of power to function.

By using the solution, students will be able to access information about the external world, enhancing their education and creating long-term career opportunities.

David Angwin, marketing director at Dell EMEA, said: “Part of our role as a global technology leader is to work together with our partners to broaden the perspectives and confidence of children to encourage them to see the wider world and to provide them with a brighter future. With the ZubaBox we can make this a reality, bringing access to new educational opportunities every day.”

Dell will partner with LEAPAfrica to incorporate IT into the local leadership curriculum, while it will work with charity partner Camara to train teachers to use the ZubaBox technology, as well as Windows Multipoint Server and Zero client technology.

This will help institutions to establish a curriculum that will maximise the benefits of accessing the shared computing system in underdeveloped communities.

Dell is showcasing the ZubaBox mobile classroom at the e-learning Africa conference, which is taking place between 29-30 May 2013 in Namibia.

“Computer Aid is delighted to be working with Dell on this project and we hope to be able to provide many more ZubaBoxes to disadvantaged communities across Africa,” said Keith Sonnet, Computer Aid’s executive chair. “By sponsoring one ZubaBox, companies can benefit an entire community by providing the ICT to support education, healthcare and business.”
