Enterprises choose new Surface

 


 

Surface users can buy fixed and mobile POS accessories from ArmorActive

 

As of 22 October 2013, business users and enterprises will be able to take advantage of the new features in the Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2.

Microsoft’s latest tablets feature significant updates including improved battery life and processing power, as well as enhanced display features, a higher camera resolution and a more ergonomic kickstand to make the tablet more comfortable to use while sat at a desk.

These features, combined with the devices’ dual-position kickstand, click-in keyboards and full size USB 3.0 port, are expected to be popular for companies with large volumes of remote sales representatives.

Several companies such as global healthcare products provider Novartis and global logistics Expeditors International have already been using the Surface Pro to enhance the mobile productivity and collaboration of their mobile sales teams. The devices have also been popular in the financial services industry. Japan’s Hokkoku Bank is already using more than 2,000 Surface Pro units in its 112 retail branches and 11 loan centres. Meanwhile, City National Bank in the US has deployed the Surface Pro to develop high-touch customer service programmes when opening new branches.

“People are changing the way they’re banking so our relationship managers are using Surface Pro to provide a high-end, technology-enriched experience that gives them access to all of their tools,” said Jim Ellaboudy, SVP of Enterprise Services at City National Bank. “Surface allows us to empower our mobile colleagues while providing the type of extraordinary service our clients expect.”

Following the popularity of the Surface RT and the addition of services such as Microsoft Office, 200GB of SkyDrive storage, free Skype wi-fi and the facilities to call landlines in 60 countries, the Surface 2 is also set to be popular in the education sector. Using Surface devices enables students to work remotely, develop skills and familiarise themselves with the advanced technology used in a business environment.

Over the past few months, Microsoft has also been working with independent software vendors to develop Windows store apps for Windows 8 and the Surface as part of its AppsForSurface programme. It has recently established partnerships with new vendors such as SAP and Omega Group, which develops of geographic information systems software for public agencies.

The company has also established partnerships with a growing number of third-party manufacturers who will supply various business accessories to complement the new Surface devices. These include fixed and mobile POS accessories from ArmorActive, leather cases and stands from Maroo and charging carts from Anthro.
