Microsoft to dominate market in 2013

2013 will be the year that Microsoft becomes relevant once again, says Andreas Pouros, chief operating officer at marketing agency Greenlight in a blog post on Econsultancy.

“It will begin to use its dominant position on the desktop and in gaming to build an exciting ecosystem that will make Microsoft a compelling choice for consumers, and by extension an increasingly important advertising partner for marketers,” said Pouros.

To back this up Pouros highlighted a number of key trends for 2012 including:

  • 40 per cent more Microsoft mobile operating systems (Windows Phone) were shipped this year compared to last, according to IDC
  • Skype (now part of the Microsoft Office division) increased its market share of the instant messaging market, and now holds 83 per cent of it with the absorption of Windows Live/Messenger (Source: Opswat)
  • Google’s market share of search dipped below 90 per cent in the UK, its lowest point in five years with Bing picking up the difference. (Source: Experian Hitwise)
  • Data so far suggests Microsoft’s Xbox will be the best selling games hardware of the year.
