Partnering for Dynamics AX for Retail

K3 Retail HCL Technologies (HCL) have announced a strategic partnership for the delivery of Microsoft’s Dynamics AX for Retail. In the wake of this news, Karen McCandless spoke to Tony Bryant, head of Business Development at K3 Retail, to find out more

How did this partnership come about and how exactly will the two companies be working together?
K3 and HCL first engaged in Autumn 2010, reviewing HCL’s Microsoft Dynamics AX 2009 retail product and other Microsoft products such as Dynamics CRM and SharePoint. As we developed the relationship we realised that the partnership would be in two distinct areas:

  • The ability to scale implementation resource and use HCL’s valued experience in Tier 1 and upper Tier 2 business transformation programmes already tried and tested in UK and global based retail organisations
  • Offshore development for the AX for Retail product developing K3’s designed multi-channel functionality.

We have already delivered outstanding functional product work packages from the offshore resource programme as part of K3’s product roadmap. Our ways of working on/offshore have been defined and tested.

What advantages will the partnership deliver to retailers?
The partnership will bring flexible deployment models with the optimisation of the total cost of ownership, which will therefore shorten payback. The ‘marriage’ of strong local retail domain consultants and a deep pool of AX for Retail resources will give retailers the confidence of the delivery of superior functionality on the latest Microsoft AX for Retail 2012 platform with a template delivery approach that does more and costs less.

Our solution, designed by retailers for retailers, delivers integrated multi-brand, multi-channel solutions based on Microsoft technology, helping retailers create joined up experiences for their customers whether they choose to buy in-store, online, via wholesale or direct.

This partnership will enable Microsoft, K3 and HCL to penetrate new larger enterprises with confidence, and deliver outstanding programmes of change in this exciting and diverse retail market

Our partnership product strategy is aligned with Microsoft’s, with plans out to 2018 and beyond. Dynamics AX for Retail is our strategic product and at the core of our retail strategy moving forward.

Our local three-year plan continues to focus on the key areas of success within the retail vertical. We recruit industry business specialists from retail who understand the complexity and the business process around areas such as B&M, warehouse management system and fulfilment, and the latest .NET applications. This we see as adding real value to our existing and potential new customers. Our R&D lab and Business Development Management team have considerable insight and intelligence into the market and its changing direction and the K3 and HCL relationship has the capability and the capacity to enhance this insight and deliver products to the market that are innovative and excel in consumer and retailer satisfaction, faster than ever before.


How will it help increase the market share for Microsoft Dynamics AX for Retail 2012?
Fundamentally this strategic partnership raises the bar in the capability to deliver ‘Powerful, Simple, and Agile’ solutions on the Dynamics AX 2012 platform. It will enable Microsoft, K3 and HCL to penetrate new larger enterprises with confidence, and deliver outstanding programmes of change in this exciting and diverse retail market.

Our proposition and go to market strategy will give retailers of all sizes the encouragement to select Microsoft as the preferred ERP.

Our leadership positioning within the Microsoft ecosystem has awarded K3 the unique position of being on the Microsoft's Partner Advisory Council for Retail, an inner circle member and a strategic retail launch partner for the latest products coming to market. This aligned with HCL’s global outsourcing and business transformation capability, offshore delivery model, collaboration on IP development and innovation, and being a go to partner for Microsoft in major accounts is a very powerful mix to increase market share in retail.

How will it help make Dynamics AX for Retail suitable for larger retailers?
For those larger retailers that are looking at a full business transformation programme then this significant partnership can deliver a full outsourcing model with a pedigree in retail that supports 7 of the world's 35 largest retailers, 10 of the world's 70 largest and 4 of India's top 5 retailers.

The AX for Retail product is fully scaled for large enterprises that trade globally. The partnership will enable new delivery capability to these businesses for rapid deployment and outstanding development pace.

This partnership makes K3 and HCL the largest player in the Dynamics AX for Retail UK market with the capacity and skill for large implementations and global rollouts. This partnership supports Microsoft’s strategy to have larger, capable partners who can deliver retail multi-channel programmes at enterprise level.
